Vibe Harsløf is my first new Danish discovery. She’s not exactly new per se, having designed jewellery for the last decade plus some more (under her own label as well as a slew of high end and kitsch collaborations) but being on the other side of the world sometime means there is a wealth of fashion we are not privy to. Yet.
Despite only been here for a short while I’ve noticed something about the way Danes design. Everything has a purpose, the philosophy is simple and, thanks to a touch of Scandanavian formalism, has a timeless appeal. Designs must be wearable. With Vibe’s work there is often an added element of humour, and it’s kind of surprising the way it sneaks into a range. Take these pieces, which are for summer; a marriage between contemporary and traditional craftmanship. The range balances between delicate gold and silver chains bonded to grecian style rope, and these bold, organic, wooden, almost primitive shapes. And then there’s the smoking pipe. It’s quite a liberal approach to design and fits with her ethos of creating jewellery pieces that challenge the established concept of what an accessory is.
