East Meets West

Echo Morgan. An artist. An enigma. A creative, Confucius type under the guise of a little china doll. A future start of the London art scene. With a style that pays respect to the past but looks to the future, Echo Morgan creates a world of whimsy and wonder with every brush stroke and burst of colour.

Alex Trochut Record Time

Have you seen the RECORD TIME™ collection curated by Refill Magazine? It’s a series of very limited edition lasered vinyl record clocks (click here to buy). As we were looking through the designs of some of our favourite artists we were reminded of some updated works on Alex Trochut’s site.

Leslie David

Leslie David

This is going to be the kind of post that gives you pangs of absolute envy. For starters graphic designer Leslie David lives in Paris. Great clothes, great cheese, the Eiffel tower. She’s interned at Ich & Kar’s and Sylvia Tournerie, has a portfolio of work that includes some major, major clients, like Chloe, Reebok and super cool fashion label Surface To Air, and is signed to DARLING management, an agency representing some of the best illustrators and designers in the business.

Donna Huddleston @ Galerie Juliette Jongma

Donna Huddleston @ Galerie Juliette Jongma

I often find myself flicking through some of my old coveted fashion magazines (read: bibles), sometimes for inspiration, sometimes for an historical perspective, to see how fashion has evolved over the last decade, and sometimes to just reminisce.  I came across a fairly recent article on ex-pat, London-based Australian illustrator Donna Huddleston, who is currently on show at the Galerie Juliette Jongma.  You can join the dots of her career, which has crossed the realms of theatre design, costume design and now fine art illustration, at the site and enjoy her latest paintings; an offering of female figures that border between doll-like geishas and sci-fi space queens.

Alvvino

Alvvino

We receive emails on a regular basis from artists all over the world submitting ideas, editorials and artwork for our issues. Given Canvas’ very distinct commentary for each issue it’s not always possible to collaborate because visually and aesthetically it’s not a match with the edition, even though the work might be amazing. One such example is Berlin based illustrator Alvvino. Akin to Surrealist artist  Duchamp, his work is both humourous and unconventional, like fantasy art. There is an amazing degree of detail in these illustrations and I think for us it’s a case of ‘note to self: Alvvino’ for future issues.

Freakscape

Freakscape

B Store presents Freakscape, an installation exhibition by illustrator Philip Smiley.  While he is more well known for detailed Victorian etchings and toiles, Freakscape draws inspiration from Smiley’s rural upbringing in Virginia.  This exhibition shows the versatility of Smiley and incorporates a variety of mixed media, from sculpture and found object to a more delicate form of illustration.

Forget Me Not

Forget Me Not

We came across Coco Pit in our research for the DESIGN issue.  Her foray into the fashion industry was via a fine arts degree and a few illustrations as favours to friends in the business.  As the story goes, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know and these favours began to receive press and now her work is recognised in both mainstream in independent press.  One of the wonderful things about working in fashion is that the opportunities are endless and now Coco has channelled her creative side into a series of digital print silk scarves under the moniker Forget Me Not.

The Broadhurst Effect

The Broadhurst Effect

Using the body as a canvas and featuring Florence Broadhurst prints, artist Emma Hack creates her own “wallpaper”. Body art is given a new energy through Hack’s relationship with Broadhurst’s illustrations and quite often it becomes difficult to determine where the work of each artist begins.
