The Unknown

Remember Muqliza Imroni, better known by her design moniker Sou Brette? Imroni popped up on our radar six months ago with a range of jewellery pieces that were raw, edgy, industrial. The last collection was punkish. Post-apocolyptic. But this time it’s about pearls and marble print cotton. Inspired by the medieval epic of sea adventurer and merchant Sadko and his journey into an otherworld, Sou Brette’s designs are an ode to the underwater kingdom. Imroni’s not the only accessory designer to take a dive with ideas this week. But rather than the typical naff nautical trend, Unknown Waters is a modern take on one of fashion’s more popular themes.

Mixing watercolours, like shades of blue that vary from an azure sky to a cobalt sea, with brass rings and resin, the collection shows a little grit like its predecessor. Sharp edges that look to cause a little damage. Circular shapes covered in rope, close enough to choke. Resin rings that take over the hand, provoking an impact. Whether this becomes the Brette signature, we’ll have to wait another season. But it’s all playful. And in a perverse way it’s pretty. Not by the conventional, definitive sense, but the gold, silver and (faux) pearls certainly lend a little luxe. It’s a grand statement in sea-faring design.
