Andrea Crews has just shown her Summer 2010 collection in Paris. The brand is relatively unknown in Australia, given Blonde Venus is their exclusive stockist, but in its native France Andrea Crews is best known as a creative collective that is self- described as a cultural intervention with a DIY aesthetic. Design is mixed with art direction, installation and photography for both high-end fashion, music and art clients, and the team is led by Maroussia Rebecq who performs between art and fashion.
Andrea Crews is, essentially, a concept. Their work stems from a punk ideal of appropriation and experimentation so that each season presents something is both simple and unusual. And made entirely from recycled garments. So it’s more than being a fashion brand; Andrea Crews is about contributing towards a sustainable economy by way of projects with activist content. Seems difficult to imagine anything too fundamentally political or social in a collection that is inspired by active leisure, but trust me, it’s there.
