Scratch My Back & I’ll Bite Your Hand

Last time we spoke of Camille Roman’s Tour De Force we were discussing the revival of headwear, of people’s new-found interest in adding another layer of accessories as adornment to an outfit. Well Tour De Force is having a revival of sorts too, by adding another element to its design repertoire. Not content with just the creation of colourful, sculptural headwear, Camille has shifted focus to include womenswear as well.

It’s the second season of womenswear for Tour De Force and it’s a perfect complement to Camille’s original aesthetic. It carries those same nuances of design, like the origami folds, that have become a defining signature of her headwear. But the new collection offers something a different. It’s a little tougher and more subversive; a decadent mix of rich metallics and textural black details, a playful interpretation of the female warrior or amazon with sexy tribalistic undertones and sexual dominance. This new woman is clearly someone to be careful with.

The collection is reminiscent of early 90s Madonna and Kylie, when they were experimenting with image and sexuality through costume. Fitting really, given the theatricality of Camille’s designs. And just as both pop icons used fashion to provoke, refusing to be defined in one way, Tour De Force has opened up a new space for fashion’s flamboyant freedom of expression.
