We always look forward to London. Of course we say this every season, so its beginning to sound like the proverbial broken record. Though the city packs a lot of promise for the summer 2011 season, it took until late Friday afternoon, the first day of Fashion Week, for us to get truly excited about what lies ahead this week in London.
Hannah Marshall has always had a reputation for being an anarchist of the London schedule. Her look is generally synonymous with tough-girl dressing, overt sexuality, always in a palette of black. But, surprise, surprise, Marshall is on the turn. Friday’s show was a slick affair, and certainly much softer than we’ve seen previously from the designer.
Firstly, there was the addition of colour. The show naturally started in Marshall’s mark of black but as the show progressed, and hemlines shortened and sleeves disappeared, the colour turned from black to dove grey. The hard and sharp silhouettes remained, but with a nod to visibility in some of those man-style ensembles it gave an opposition to the more architectural pieces. Of course this will find favour with buyers and editors because it’s Marshall’s most memorable collection to date.
