Another discovery from the city of Copenhagen, one relatively new to the Danish fashion scene. Having spent a morning on Silkegade, one of the many side streets slightly off the city’s central shopping strip that are home to the more edgy and innovative fashions, Susanne Guldager’s summer collection, Esoteric Dreams, was spotted on the racks of Nag, a niche boutique specialising in exclusive and upcoming designers.
In the two years since the start of her eponymous label, Susanne has garnered a lot of attention in short space of time. A collaboration with TopShop, pages of editorial press, and a presentation in Paris. Like many of her Copenhagen contemporaries, Susanne’s designs are developed from a conceptual and intuitive angle. Craftsmanship is key but there is a humour to her work, perhaps subconsciously encouraged from her time of tutelage spent with Henrik Vibskov. They seem to share that same approach of creating avant-garde yet wearable clothing; fashion is a space to challenge on an artistic and academic level.
It will be at least another full season until a new Susanne Guldager collection is created, with the designer taking time out for a new challenge: motherhood. It will be interesting to see how and if the duality of designer and mother will influence her work. Having only just come across her designs it will be with much anticipation when we welcome her back.
