I thought it fitting our first post of the year be relevant to my new location. My idea of cold versus the actual reality of the weather here in Copenhagen is vastly different. The disparity in temperature between Brisbane and Copenhagen is somewhere around 40c and no matter how prepared I thought I was for the cold, my wardrobe wasn’t. What I need are some heavy wool knits, so who better to be inspired by than knitwear extraordinare Sandra Backlund?
In previous seasons Sandra created pieces with a couture-driven craftmanship. Her collections couldn’t be found in boutiques because the designs are bespoke. So it’s interesting to see a more commercial approach with summer, perhaps because in part of a change in production methods; the collection was manufactured by Italian knit specialists. While her collections are, to a degree, wearable, I think for most it would take an ounce or two of confidence to wear because of their defining silhouette. So while that aesthetic of meticulous craftwork is still obvious, it’s manipulated in a way that will be more savvy to shoppers. And I think Sandra’s designs are always deserving of reaching a wider audience.
