Rike Feurstein

There seems to be a reluctance amongst Australians to wear hats as a fashion accessory. Perhaps because hats tend to be worn for a function, for sport, for sun protection, rather than as fashion. A hat really is the pièce de résistance of an outfit. It can turn an otherwise bland look into an announcement. So perhaps that’s where the hesitation lies – in making a statement. Are we afraid to take on a fashion challenge?

For the uninitiated Rike Feurstein’s designs would be a perfect choice for a first-timer. Her approach to millinery is about giving a new perspective to classic shapes through bold colours and deluxe materials. Some of the styles included in the Classics range are easy to identify, given their historical reference, and even easier to wear. A visor? Practically part of our summer wardrobe. Put a feather in it. Granted it’s knitted (this is Rike’s winter 2010/11 collection), but that’s what gives her work an oomph of fashion. As we move through the season’s selection some of the styles do become a little more suited to the fashion forward but a cloche is certainly nothing to be afraid of. Neither is leopard print. Or sequins. Accept the challenge! Embrace your inner-Gaga, no matter how meek, and give yourself some grace, poise and confidence by being fashionably ahead this winter. Thank you Rike!
