I always succumb to the sweet charm of Charles Anastase. Maybe it’s the channelled librarian geek chic. I don’t know, but I just have an affinity for Mr A. I find there’s something really unpredictable about his collections in the way they’re put together on the runway, yet they find a common thread; that being a French take on restrained sex appeal in a girly kind of way. And it’s always a perfected look, despite the contrary. Details are important to this designer.
Waif-like with carefree bangs, models wafted down the runway in a dream-like state of simplicity. It was so romantic. Charles forgoes overt sexuality in favour of a languid look that is nonetheless perfectly at ease with well-tailored pieces. Attention, and volume, was drawn to the neck; collars were angelic peter pan style or formed from soft pleats. He chose pretty pastels for shirt-dresses and waisted skirts, like peach, lilac, mint green, with cream and white, and surprised with silver. There’s always a lesson to learn in colour combinations. Sure, this is French chic but it’s a style I’ll channel next season. Sans the high platforms, perhaps.
