No longer are sunglasses solely about protecting the eyes. Blame the machinations of the fashion industry for the explosion of designer sunglasses mid-noughties. Whether it was the influence of good design or celebrity endorsement, they’ve become the image item of our decade. Maybe their appeal is because they are a fashion item that doesn’t discriminate. Regardless of how much one earns, sunglasses are a luxury that everyone can afford. And are willing to splurge on.
Enter Isson Eyewear, a compromise to both price and austerity. Isson are an independent Australian eyewear brand that have popped up on our eyewear watch thanks to a few clever designer collaborations. Given designer Catherine Federici’s background in industrial design, Isson’s eyewear has an artisanal approach to form. Turning a blind eye to ostentatious styling and super-sized frames, Isson’s anonymity in design is appealing. Unlike massive designer brands that scream of logo, these sunglasses have a quiet confidence that wrap around the eyes. The look is forward and bold, with a little quirk. More expressive, less herd-like mentality.
Set against an array of different finishes, including translucent gel-like frames and flat colour finishes, the look of this unisex range is a little academic, a little vintage, all fashion. Using hand sourced Italian acetates in a series of heavy set frames with a sculpted feel, there’s enough selection in shape to contend to the whim of buyers. It’s high fashion with an Isson twist.
