The closing show of Copenhagen Fashion Week always comes from Henrik Vibskov. If the crowd was feeling patriotic for Peter earlier in the week, for Henrik those feelings manifest into something much bigger. His shows are always outrageous, a wonderful spectacle of drama, performance art, design and music, though slightly toned down for summer. It’s like he creates a universe around the clothes. This season’s runway show was held in a park – perhaps the only local designer that could score such a public coup – in the centre of Copenhagen city.
Models paraded down a makeshift dock wearing UV goggles as sunglasses and carrying rattan laptop cases, in an abstract vision that married 1930s sunbathers with Japanese sleepwear. Henrik’s strength is his oddball combinations of colour, print and texture. This time it was mis-matched tones of orange, black and lilac, argyle print, checks, and camouflage. Henrik’s men definitely drew the better end of the fashion stick this summer. While he may fool around with fashion – his seasons are completely devoid of trend – he still manages to design exactly what people need to wear. Not an easy feat in such a fickle industry, and perhaps why Henrik’s considered king of Danish fashion.
