This is a first for Canvas. Never before have we featured a textile designer. I suppose we’ve been concerned with the end product, rather than the beginning stages of a design.
Rouse Phllips are a design studio based in Sydney who specialise in creating original repeat designs that can be applied to a tribe of textiles like canvas, paper fabric and digital print. With a background in fine arts and textile and graphic design, their concept prides on new ideas and a new aesthetic. Current trends are kept in mind because they work with clients both commercial and boutique, but ultimately Rouse Phillips have an unique vision.
Inspiration is drawn from the organic and the ordered, the ancient and the apocalyptic, and I think with these examples that becomes slightly obvious. Although I have to admit I find them to be a stylistic version of a Rorschach test. Their catalogue of prints are varied by I found myself intuitively drawn to certain designs. What does this mean about my emotional functioning? I’d like to think it means I can appreciate innovative design.
