Splendour in the Winter

Splendour in the Winter

No doubt you're all aware of the just-released Splendour In The Grass lineup. There have been some big acts to grace the Grass stage in previous years but this year's lineup is a killer and kind of harks back to the lineups of its original days. Remember PJ Harvey belting it out on stage wearing that brighter-than-sunshine jumpsuit? And who could forget Cold Play's fervent debut in Oz, serenading the crowd with Yellow. This was well before they turned into a celebrity stadium rock band.

Fashion Fix

With excitement growing over next month’s fashion week, especially given the number of esteemed international guests, including the effervescent Susie Bubble and street blogging cohort Tommy Ton, we thought we would remind you of some inspiring fashion exhibitions happening around the country. We’ve mentioned Brisbane’s coup in hosting the Stephen Jones retrospective, and the National Gallery of Victoria is also host to an interesting sartorial spectacle. Drape features fashion, photography and other visual mediums to explore the relationship between the manipulation of fabric on the body. Tracing an historical line from Cristobal Balenciaga to present-day modernist designers like Hussein Chalayan, the exhibition focuses on the practice of drape while extending the boundaries of fashion.

The Infinite Shape of Rainbows

The Infinite Shape of Rainbows

Beci Orpin, kooky creator of Princess Tina and Tiny Mammoth, brings her folk narratives and nostalgia to another solo exhibition. The Infinite Shape of Rainbows, on show at Lamington Drive, will feature new prints, collages, and painted wooden dolls in that kind of whimsy and dreamscape style we’ve come to expect from a Beci Orpin idea.

It’s Glitz!

It’s Glitz!

Anyone who was in Melbourne recently for the Fashion Festival would or should have been aware of a neat little jewellery sideshow presented by the Glitzern girls. Glitzern is one of those must-go-to shopping destinations whenever you're in town because the store's stock of accessories is like a metaphor for the city. There you'll find an eclectic mix of Australian art jewellers, costume ranges and rare vintage pieces. The more you search, the more you find. And it was upon hearing of Glitzern's Earring Festival that we came across the over-the-top designs of Lia T.

Say Yes!

Say Yes!

Feathers have always been a friend to fashion and since Madonna fronted up to Louis Vuitton's Summer 2009 campaign ostrich, peacock and pheasant plumes have been a mainstay on the catwalk. One local label to follow this literal bird influence, in an ornamental, crafted manner, is Yes Vincent.

Another One From The West

Another One From The West

Having just published our newest feature on Perth-based fashion photographer Traianos Pakioufakis we thought we would dig a little deeper into the west coast fashion scene and fortunately so, because we came across another interesting name, jewellery designer Alistair Yiap.

The Last Bag

The Last Bag

I have a confession to make, and it's one that will perhaps force a collective gasp from our female readers: I don't own a handbag. In fact, I don't even carry a wallet. I simply put things in my pockets. Keys, phone, cards. Done. I don't understand how women can fawn over an"it" bag, or status bag, or whatever must-have bag fashion has dictated for the season. Flashy hardware and ostentatious logo branding doesn't really suit my style. And what of this nonsense, "what a bag says about you"? I don't want to be psycho-analysed by leather. I'm not out to bag a handbag (pardon the pun), or the luxury goods market for that matter, but a bag it isn't something I feel the need to lust after. Is it?
