Goodbye To One Of The Last Decent Live Music Venues in Brisbane
We’re steering away a little from our usual content with this post, but it’s an important one which I’m sure all Brisbane indie-lovers will appreciate. Ric’s Bar, one of the stalwart live music venues, closed down on Sunday night. Boooooo! Actually, it’s been bought out which is a fate far worse because, if local forums are to be believed, neighbouring bar RGs have taken on the lease . Noooooo! RGs is the antithesis of Rics. They play the worst techno and R&B. And I don’t want to make disparraging remarks about the patrons but their behaviour is often less than savoury, shall we say. God, I had so many good times at Rics in my younger years, especially when Abby used to host her Love & Roxy electro/clash nights. The place was dingy but it had character. The staff were fun, the drinks were cheap, and everybody knew how to have a good time (sans violence, unlike most other bars in the Valley). What’s happening to our live music venues? First they tore down Festival Hall to build apartments, The Arena seems to have died a slow death and now we say goodbye to Rics. Thank god for The Zoo. It may be 10am in the morning but I say let’s have a farewell toast to one of the last great live music venues in Brisbane.

The Great Escape
I have been waiting for Pepper & Pistol's summer look book to hit my inbox since New York fashion week. I love their look books. I really enjoy seeing the sartorial story continue through a more graphic medium. It can be difficult to put together a look book that finds a balance between somethings that is product-focused but still fashionable and still identifiable with the brand. P & P always seem to find that balance. Working with Gil Inoue The Great Escape look book is equally beautiful as the clothes themselves.

Yay!
Did you hear The Pains of Being Pure At Heart are touring? Could summer seriously get any better? This is one of our favourite new bands. They are always on high rotation at home and in the office and their debut, self-titled album cover is permanently etched into my retinas from staring at it so often . I even said to my friend Evie that if I was in a band I’d be channeling some of Peggy Wang’s quasi-Yoko, nostalgic, hair-in-the-eyes look. Now we just have to wait until February…

All Of The Above
One of our favourite independent Australian labels of the moment is Melbourne's All Of The Above, a design studio based on the philosophy of collaboration and cooperation

Iris
In a way, Canvas has grown up with Sara Phillips. We met Sara when she presented her first collection during fashion week 2008. We were still only quite young ourselves at the time. What I saw in that first range was something very sweet; floral prints, clean lines, soft cottons.

Starlight Echoes Part II
I first met Paula Walden several years ago when I was styling a commercial shoot for ghd. Paula was one of the models we were considering for the job. Beauty aside, one of the first things I noticed was the amazing ring she was wearing.

Chih-Han Hsu
I really like a style of photography that is poetic and real and familiar, like you've chanced upon a private moment. It's very voyeuristic, I know, but it also gives a sense of intimacy. When I look at some of the work of local Brisbane photographer, Chih-Han Hsu that's the kind of feeling I get.
