Wool Me, Knit Me

Wool Me, Knit Me

When I look at this story, shot by Krzysztof Wyzynski, I immediately connect it to fashion eccentric Anna Piaggi. Maybe it’s the balls of wool worn as a crown. Maybe it’s the collision of colour and mix of dramatic prints. Maybe it’s the pencil ringed eyes. Either way I find it really inspiring, both editorially and sartorially.

Tiki Mania Maori

Tiki Mania Maori

We love the conceptual approach of Ann-Sofie Madsen’s graduate collection for The Danish Design school. Why? Because she has translated the traditional ideas of Maori culture through a contemporary social commentary on our notions of civilisation. The exotic references could have been taken literally but Ann-Sofie rebelled, instead using shoelaces and tattooed skins to confront very classic, very European and very tailored shapes.

And We Love

And We Love

Arnsdorf's summer is sharp, sensitive and strong. In Jade's own words, the idea behind the And You Love collection is about moving forward and the concept and pursuit of considered danger. It's about the idea of risk aversion and a seemingly dangerous decision becomes more so if not taken.

Breezy, easy glamour

Breezy, easy glamour

We love to talk about Little Tailleur. In summer 2008 we waxed lyrical about a "beautifully streamlined collection that is modern and feminine with a strong European sensibility". Winter continued with the tailored, demi-couture techniques and clean simple lines and now Georgette Tahche, creative force behind the label, presents summer 2010. I was disappointed to find Little Tailleur a no-show at this year's Fashion Week, even it's offsite schedule, so I have been waiting, waiting, waiting since May for a sign of summer. And here it is!

Alvvino

Alvvino

We receive emails on a regular basis from artists all over the world submitting ideas, editorials and artwork for our issues. Given Canvas’ very distinct commentary for each issue it’s not always possible to collaborate because visually and aesthetically it’s not a match with the edition, even though the work might be amazing. One such example is Berlin based illustrator Alvvino. Akin to Surrealist artist  Duchamp, his work is both humourous and unconventional, like fantasy art. There is an amazing degree of detail in these illustrations and I think for us it’s a case of ‘note to self: Alvvino’ for future issues.

Natascha Stolle

Natascha Stolle

As we get ready for new season shows I just want to put in a little reminder post about Natascha Stolle’s Winter 2010 collection.   While these runway shots were taken from the Fashion East runway show back in February, her geek-chic pieces will find their way into boutiques very shortly.

Nineteenth Meredith

The ridiculously hot weather we’ve been experiencing in Brisbane lately has meant my summer wardrobe is out of the closet far earlier than usual. There are many things I doth protest about the warmer seasons, namely the searing heat and humidity, sunburn and sweat, but it also brings something far more forgiving: the music festival. This year I’ve got my eye on the Meredith Music Festival. It has the best boutique line-up of bands, like Crocodiles (!), Akron/Family (!!), Animal Collective (!!!) and Jarvis Cocker (!!!!!), but it is also is the hardest festival to buy a ticket for. With it’s NO DICKHEAD policy it means that punters are there to enjoy the music, rather than the music being a sideline to something else. To view the lineup click here. If you like it, and I know you will, you have to enter the ballot otherwise you’ll have less than buckley’s of a chance. Good luck!

Supermarket Sarah

Supermarket Sarah

Sarah Banger, the online creator of Supermarket Sarah, decided to leave the corporate world and set up shop in her own home, round the corner from Portobello Market where she has a stall for all her vintage and recycled treasures. She’s got a discerning eye for quirky and collectable pieces and each shot is a specific story, creating a themed collection for the store.
